Cornerstones
of GLOW project and strong evidence of success of the project are the
initiations of the GLOW alumnae after the summer school. The SYC provides them
the support and information to effectively plan and run peer education sessions
transferring the acquired knowledge and skills to their peers. The GLOW alumnae
also plan and execute community small projects together with local youth to
make the small difference in their communities.
I had the idea for quite some time. I
wanted to connect education with action. It is often easy to talk about what
needs to be done, but, unfortunately, this is not always connected with the
action. I had concerns whether or not I can organize it myself. So I approached
the director of our school with the idea and request for support. Mr. Grigoryan
was very supportive and decided to join us. I got even more excited. The
preparation started. I developed the session using the GLOW materials,
interactive sessions and information I found online. I prepared a brochure on
environmental topics to distribute to the participants. My 18 high school
classmates, a few teachers and the director joined us. The open air seminar,
October 22nd 2011, gave stronger connection of the topic and the
surrounding environment. All of us were very excited and enthusiastic. At the
end of the day we prepared some posters to pass our message about clean
environment to others from our community. The event was a great success. This
was definitely the most exciting, the most unforgettable and informative day in
our lives. We felt like a big and connected family, where everyone knows their
responsibilities and the environmental is our home, where everything is clean
and organized. I felt doing something good I step up another stair in the
ladder of my life…
This year
environment has been at the center of attention for some of the GLOW girls.
Several of them organized environmental actions in their communities.
Syuzanna Galstyan, 16 years old, from the village Khot
in Syunik region in the very South of Armenia was concerned about the
environmental issues in her community and the protection of cultural heritage.
Her approach was to organize a seminar to raise awareness about the
environmental issues and connect it with the visit and cleanup of the road and
surroundings the local chapel Mrkadzor.
